If you would like to add smart devices to your home, without using counters, shelves and floor space, the Albatross system might be right for you. This system is comprised of a Donut and Pods that mount on your ceiling. The Donut functions as the central controller to provide power and signals to the Pods. The Pods are used to mount smart devices, which you can pick and choose as needed. Optional smart devices include:

• Camera
• Speakers
• Microphone
• Lights
• Projector
• Smoke Detector
• Carbon Monoxide Detector
• Ceiling Fan

In addition, an AC socket is mounted on the Donut to provide power for external AC devices (e.g. party lights, Christmas lights).

This project shows you how create a secure safe out of ordinary furniture (any shape or size), including; dresser or kitchen drawers (for jewelry, money, credit cards), foot locker (for guns, skis), garage cabinets (for tools, equipment), closets and cabinets (for filing cabinets, large objects). This SlideDeck provides an overview of the project, including; Secret Safe concept, operation of key components, types of enclosures/applications and installation guidelines.

For about $100 you can build the eLock to secure your Secret Safe. This slide deck shows you how to design, build and install the eLock within an enclosure. The eLock operates via encrypted remote control.

For about $80 you can build the Battery Pack. The Battery Pack can be installed within a locked enclosure to provide power for the eLock. The Battery Pack remains dormant and provides “zero” power unless activated by an external magnet. This unique feature allows it to last for many years inside a locked enclosure without the need to replace batteries.

Portable Air Conditioners (PACs) provide a great way to produce cold air in just about any type of indoor environment. However, there’s things to consider and problems to solve in order to minimize daily upkeep while ensuring that you receive a reliable stream of cool air matched to your comfort level. The topics include; how to build a simple platform (and accessories) to solve some challenging PAC problems, reviews to help in selecting the right PAC for you, and tips on PAC installation, operation, maintenance, and performance improvement.

For less than $200 you can build a platform for your PAC that will provide some major benefits while adding a unique and attractive addition to your home furnishings. The platform provides self-contained vibration dampers to reduce noise and an enclosure underneath to hold a tank or pump to dispose of condensation.

For less than $100 you can add a pump to automate the disposal of water created from PAC condensation. The pump starts after a quart of water has accumulated in an internal tank and shuts off when the tank is just about empty. The water can be pumped out to any suitable remote location, such as a floor drain, bathtub or back yard garden.

If your PAC generates a great deal of condensation and you are concerned about the possibility of water overflow, you can build an emergency shutoff valve (ESV) for less than $165. The ESV shuts off the PAC drain outlet when triggered by overflow sensors in the Water Pump.

If you’re planning on buying a new PAC, you’ll probably want to shop around, do some online research and check out the ratings/reviews of recommended products. To assist with your research, Project Launchpad has generated listings of brand name PACs (recommended by other websites) and key information for each product. This includes; product make/model, links to detailed product information/reviews, posted user ratings and a score based on reading the details in user reviews.

The most important thing to consider when buying a PAC is matching cooling capacity to your environment. This Slide Deck provides a unique and accurate method of computing cooling capacity based on several factors, including; room size, ceiling height, window placement and appliances.
